He found painting ‘didn’t satisfy in the way that textiles did’ and when he does paint he paints ‘as an embroiderer’ - putting in the detail, drawing over the top; so he is ‘more confident and happier articulating through textiles.’ His drawings become the basis of the printed fabric that is his starting point, ‘then I respond to it and make it become the thing that it is meant to be.’ It is an art process with cloth as the starting point rather than a design process with cloth as the end point, Figure 7.22.
