The history begins with a section on the education of Blacks before 1800, a period in which there is little evidence of formal education for African Americans despite the presence of relatively large numbers of free Blacks throughout the state. If your young reader likes to read on an e-reader, you are in luck, most of these are available in digital format. When I try to think back to the first book I read that discussed a culture other than mine, I get stuck on The Color Purple, even though that would have been in high school.
